For the first
time in his 23,000 mile walking career, Walkin' Jim
completed a hike as a fund-raiser. From April to
September 1996 he hiked 2,766 miles and collected $21,000
in pledges to support our country's wilderness heritage.
Jim spent nearly six months trekking from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail which runs the length of California, Oregon, and Washington. |

Each mile he walked directly benefited three groups which make a difference in protecting our nation's wild country and wild lives. Those who made pledges received a series of five updates from the trail during the course of the walk. Photos from the trek were published on a website for the pledge walk. Jim has been very involved over the years in trying to protect our last wild places. Right now is a very dark time for anything to do with the environment. We can make a difference. This one of a kind place is being severely threatened by hostile
political action in our nation's Congress.
The health of an ecosystem can often be determined by the prescence

predators. The folks at Predator
Conservation Alliance are very committed to protecting predatory species
as an ecological rallying point for wildland preservation. They're striving
to educate the public on the importance of predator-prey relationships, and
have taken a leading position in the fight to dismantle the Animal Damage Control
(ADC) program. The ADC spends millions of federal dollars each year to kill thousands
of bears, lions, coyotes, etc., not because they pose any immediate threat,
but rather just because they are predatory species.
