Jim's paintings were done with cattlemarkers on canvas. Cattlemarkers (or livestock markers) are used by ranchers and farmers to mark their livestock. They're an oil based, crayon-shaped thing (but larger), very messy and very fun.
Many of these images are now available as greeting cards.
