Donate to Jim's Medical Fund

Walkin' Jim leads a very healthy lifestyle. Not only does he love to walk, but also he eats mostly organic or locally grown food, and does not smoke or drink.  But Jim's family has polycystic kidney disease and for most of his life he has known that he has had the disease. In 2004 Jim's kidneys finally gave out. On March 16, 2004 his friend and donor, John Giacalone, donated a kidney. What a gift!!! John is a true hero!!! The transplant went great and allowed Jim to keep touring with his music and message, and to keep doing his long treks in the wild places, too.

Unfortunately, since he has been on immune-suppressants for his kidney it has opened him up to many other things. In 2007 and early 2008 he went through three months of surgery, chemo, and radiation for cancer in his tonsils and the lymph nodes in his neck.  Once again he pulled through and was able to return to touring, sharing the inspiration of this Earth's beauty with audiences all across America.  He also went back to spending time in the backcountry doing more long wilderness treks.

In late May of 2010 he again started facing extensive testing and medical expenses for what went undiagnosed for a couple months. He saw doctors in Helena, Billings, and Seattle but to no avail.  When terrible fevers started hitting him every day he was finally hospitalized in Billings, MT for 12 days.  The news wasn't good.  Jim's cancer had spread into his liver and was causing lung problems, extreme fatigue, and other issues.

Jim is unable to tour and has canceled all of his fall schedule. He'll be undergoing chemo treatment in Helena over the next couple months in hopes that it can halt the spread of the cancer.
